Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ – Underlayment

The pairing of gypsum underlayment and sound control mats effectively increases the FIIC (Field Impact Insulation Class) and IIC (Impact Insulation Class) ratings in a project. IIC is the laboratory ratings for how sound resistant a system is while FIIC is the field test for how well a system does. A high IIC could change once the materials are placed in a project, so the FIIC tends to be the more accurate end rating. The higher the FIIC or IIC, the higher level of sound resistance a building has.

Structis focuses on just one section of flooring: underlayment. But you may be wondering just where this layer falls within the four levels of flooring. Here are the main types:

  • Joists – This is the wood foundation and frame that holds the topmost layers of flooring in place.
  • Subfloor – The structural layer of plywood that goes underneath the underlayment.
  • Underlayment – The smooth, leveled layer of flooring often including poured concrete and/or sound control mats.
  • Floor Covering – This is the topmost layer. Carpet, tile, vinyl, and other flooring options make up this layer.

Yes! Underlayment is extremely important to add longevity to your project’s floors. By pouring underlayment, it helps keep mold, mildew, and moisture at bay while providing a durable, smooth structure to lay the topmost flooring. Plus, it can increase fire and sound resistance in a building.

Yes! Sound control mats work to absorb sound vibrations by offering a thick rubber texture beneath the poured underlayment. This works to dampen noises in multifamily and commercial buildings. The gypsum underlayment and sound control mat system work together to ensure a more sound resistant environment.
